The Pursuit of Fulfillment In The Discipling of Nations: How To Win The Race of Ministry And Obtain Divine PRIZE!

Today, by the help of the Holy Spirit, we are continuing and perhaps concluding the series we began in March, looking at a couple of things under this discipleship that the Lord has called us into. And today we are looking at "The Pursuit of Fulfillment on CentreNDL”>Fulfillment In The Discipling of Nations." The goal is that we disciple nations, that is the goal. The reason why you are a disciple is because one day, you will become a discipler. The reason why you are a teacher is so that one day you will also raise up teachers among your students. The reason why you are whatever you are is so that you can have another of your kind.

Listen To Podcast: THE PURSUIT OF FULFILLMENT IN THE DISCIPLING OF NATIONS

I am sure you remember that Adam was the first person that God created, and so, God has billions of human beings on the earth today through the mould of Adam. And so you will see that discipleship is in that kind of fashion. God raises up one and then through the one, God raises up others. The goal is that nations be discipled, not just a nation, not just a pool of nations, but all the nations of the earth should be discipled. And what does it mean to be discipled? Because one of the things you must understand about discipleship is that you will become like your Master, you will become like your teacher. Even Jesus said that same thing, that when a disciple is perfect, he will become just like his teacher. So, a perfect disciple will become just like his teacher. And so, the goal of discipleship is to replicate the identity, the personality and even the power of the teacher or the discipler even in the disciples.

Now, what we see across the nations is a far cry from that. There are many people who seem to be growing and so many people who seem not to be growing at all. There seems to be a kind of disconnect between teachers and people who listens to them, between masters and people that follow them. The goal is not that there should be a large gap between the masters and their disciples, but that the disciples should become like their masters. There was a time that Elijah was a master over Elisha. And even though they were both men, one was a master, the other one was a disciple. Now, that did not remain forever. At a point, Elisha became a master and so, there was an opportunity for him to become what his master was. There was a time he said "Where is the God of my master Elijah?"

There was even a time the people confirmed that the spirit of Elijah rests upon Elisha that is how it is supposed to be. Discipleship is a process that transfers spirit from masters to their followers, from teachers to their students. The same spirit that rests upon the head begins to rest upon the body. And that is what happens to us as a church when we follow indeed the Lord Jesus Christ. So the same Spirit of God that is upon the Lord Jesus Christ rests upon the body of Christ when we truly follow. It is not enough for us to say "I am a Christian, so I carry the Spirit of Christ." If you do not follow the teacher who is the Lord, the Master Jesus, then the Spirit of Christ will not rest upon you.

Now, it was at the time when Elijah was going that a double portion of his spirit rest upon Elisha. And so, he was able to do much more than Elijah did. Jesus also said it "the works that I do, you will do, and greater works than this you will do because I go to the Father." Because when I go to the Father, I will send the Holy Spirit to you. He will not just come and spend a few days with you, or a few moments, He will come and be with you and in you. And the reason why you will be able to do what I am doing now and greater than this is because the Spirit of the Father that is in me will be also in you. So we are not different. You called me "Lord, Lord", I have the Spirit of the Lord. Now the same Spirit of the Lord will rest upon you. And so, the nature of my ministry and my work will also become the nature of your work.

Now, we understood previously when we examined the purpose of discipleship that the primary reasons for discipleship is that witnesses be unto the Lord Jesus Christ. Now you are discipled by Jesus and you are expected to become a witness unto Him, not a witness unto one another, but a witness unto Him. You go before others to tell others about Him, you don't go about telling others about Karl Max except you are a disciple of Karl Max. If you are a disciple of our Lord Jesus, then the words of our Lord Jesus becomes a guide for your life. You pattern your life, your career after His. Your goal is to become like Him and to do the things that He does. So Jesus said you will become witnesses unto me and you will begin from where you are now. And you will do it from now, this dispensation of lockdown even to the ends of the earth, even when the earth is no more. You will do it from your today even to your tomorrow, from your youth to your old age. You will not stop; neither will you retire from the purpose of your discipleship. I the Lord have discipled you so that you can disciple others by witnessing unto me. Because until you witness to others about me, you lack capacity to disciple.

Your power, your tool for discipleship is your witness. The words that you hear from me that you tell another is your tool for discipling others. Jesus said you will be able to teach others the things that I commanded you (Matthew 28). So, a disciple is one who has been commanded by a master, who now teaches others the same things he has been commanded. And so, with that, he is able to raise other people after his own order and ultimately, after the order of the teachings that you have been commanded. So the same one who is discipling you disciple even thousands under you. But I am sure we know that this is not the crux of our discussion today.

We are in a situation where multitudes are following certain people and are actually and unfortunately, not following the Lord Jesus Christ through those people. That is the error that we have seen in our time. And so, the best people become now are to become like their pastors or their teachers, and they have nothing that links them to our Lord Jesus Christ. So people like that are said to be a people who have a form of godliness but they lack the power thereof. There is a power of being a follower of Jesus Christ. He says "These signs will follow them that believe. In my name" not in the name of pastor, they will cast out demons, and that is what one of the things we will see today, because we are looking at the pursuit of fulfillment in the discipling of nations.

You are to disciple nations, but you must be fulfilled in your pursuit. Except you are fulfilled in your pursuit, then you have pursued without any kind of fulfillment, which is an endless pursuit. Imagine again, you are watching a football match, and you watch for about one hour, and there are no goals. So what is the joy? I am sure you know that no matter how much people spend to watch a game, once there are no goals scored, the fans leave the stadium not excited. Why? No goal is scored. So, until goals are scored, there are no celebrations. And it is these goals that bring satisfaction to the fans and even to the players. So, there is no point for you to be in ministry if you will have no fulfillment in view, when there is nothing that you are aiming at or nothing that excites your heart that gladdens your soul.

Many people who have began ministry, who have began the responsibility or started a work of discipling nations have in the pursuit of fulfillment derailed into the pursuit of something else, and we are going to look at it. The goal or the standard and expectation of God for us as His people who are truly witnessing unto Him is that, we pursue fulfillment. But some others have deviated and are in pursuit of something else. Let us quickly go into 1 Corinthians 9 and I will read from verse 24-27. The Bible says:

"Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may obtain it." You know our focus is still The Pursuit of Fulfillment on CentreNDL”>Fulfillment In The Discipling of Nations. 25 And everyone who competes for the prize is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a perishable crown, but we for an imperishable crown. 26 Therefore I run thus: not with uncertainty. Thus I fight: not as one who beats the air. 27 But I discipline my body and bring it into subjection, lest, when I have preached to others, I myself should become disqualified."

Now it becomes obvious to us that the primary responsibility of Apostle Paul was to preach to others. Now while doing that, he decide to be careful, to mind how he does that work. His work is to preach to others, to reach out to other people. But he tried as much as possible as the Lord helped him, to do it in a different way from how others are doing it. He says in verse 24 that "Do you not know that those who run in a race all run." So, there are many people that are running, there are many people that are in pursuit, many people are chasing things, some people are chasing shadows, some people are even chasing themselves. Now, while everybody could be in pursuit, I don't just pursue. He says "Therefore I run thus: not with uncertainty."

Apostle said he was not running not being mindful of why and to whom I am running to. Apostle Paul said he was running not being mindful whom he is running for on behalf. Apostle Paul said he knew whom he was running to, and what he was running for. He was not running in ignorance, with certainty and not uncertainty. This is important for us to know as disciplers of people and disciplers of nations. It is important you know that while everybody could be discipling nations, you must not disciple nations with uncertainty. You must not do your ministry with uncertainty, you must be clear, you must know whom you have believed and you must know whom you are running to and why.

Why are you ministering? What is your drive, what is your goal and what is your focus? What do you want to achieve, what brings you satisfaction? Don't be ignorant of those things lest you are led by unseen forces that manipulate your life daily. Some people don't know why they wake up daily. They don't even know why they do what they do. People do certain things because others are doing it. It is beyond that! There is a force working within you, making you to do things, not necessarily because are aware of why, but because you just want to do it. There is a force pulling you to join the crowd. All run but one received the prize. Run in such a manner, pattern your pursuit in ministry, pattern your focus and activities in ministry in such a manner that you will obtain a prize.

Apostle Paul said I know my responsibility is to preach, which everybody is doing. There are prophets preaching, there are pastors preaching, there are apostles preaching, there are teachers preaching, there are evangelists preaching, and therefore, I don't just want to be a preacher; I want to be a careful preacher. I don't want it to be that after I have preached to others; I myself become disqualified. I don't want to make others qualified at the expense of my disqualification. This is what Apostle Paul said. So he said "I discipline my body" in order to see that I am fulfilled in the things that God has called me to do. I don't want to be a minister who is mastered by his own body, because you cannot serve two masters. Jesus said "nobody can serve God and serve mammon", you cannot serve two masters. If your body is your master, then you cannot have Jesus as your master.

If you can never afflict your body, you don't want any insult on your body, you don't want any pain on your body, and then you will have little opportunity to even follow the Lord Jesus Christ. You remember the story in the Bible when Jesus was talking about a people. Jesus called unto them and they began to give all manner of excuses as to why they cannot follow Jesus. Jesus told them to follow Him and they were given all manner of reasons why they cannot follow Him. But you know some people, they are so smart. They will not give Jesus any excuse for not following Him, they will follow Him and yet follow other things. This is the most dangerous part of it. They are followers of Jesus, but they are followers of themselves. They are being mastered by Jesus, but they are being mastered by their own desires as well. And so, what happens? They go to places, they do crusades, they do very activities, they do so much but they lose so much.

They are doing so much in ministry at the expense of their own soul. As they are gaining people so to say, they are losing their own lives. Why? To the people in public, they are following Jesus; they are fulfilling the purpose of Christ. But to themselves, in their own secret places; they are fulfilling their own desires. They do the things they said people should not do in their closets. So, Jesus does not see them as true followers, but the people think that they are following. And this is an error. Apostle Paul knew this and he said decided never to follow this path. And so, he disciplines his body and bring into subjection so that his body can follow truly the one whom he is following.

Colossians 4:17, still shows us Apostle Paul admonishing further as regarding the works of ministry in this place. The Bible says "And say to Archippus, “Take heed to the ministry which you have received in the Lord, that you may fulfill it." That you may obtain it! Everyone is running, but only one receives the prize. But you run in such a manner that you will obtain it. Tell Gboyega Adedeji to take heed to the ministry that he has received in the Lord that he may obtain. Because, you must not get into the realm of uncertainty, you must not become a fighter that beats the air, busy but not effective. When you are boxing the air, nobody will feel the pain. The devil will not feel the pain; you are not going to feel it either. But you think since you are sweating, you are doing something. Apostle Paul said I don't fight as such and I don't run with uncertainty. And because of this, you must say to Archippus that the ministry he has received from the Lord, he should take heed so that he may fulfill it.

There is a responsibility of pursuing what the Lord has committed into your hands unto fulfillment. That is the expectation. Until you are fulfilled, you don't stop chasing the purpose of God for your life. The responsibility hanging on your head must not be abandoned until you are done. Until you have reached it and lay hold of what you must lay hold, until you have obtained, until you have attained, until you have fulfilled what God has destined for you, you don't stop. But let us see what is capable of making people stop even before they obtain. The Pursuit of Fulfillment on CentreNDL”>Fulfillment In The Discipling of Nations, that is the goal, that is the ideal. But others have abandoned the pursuit of fulfillment to pursue something else.

THE EXAMPLES OF DISQUALIFIED PEOPLE IN MINISTRY

Number one, Matthew 7:21-23:

“Not everyone (and this really connects with everything we have been saying) who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, (another word for enter the kingdom of heaven is receive heaven's approval, receive God's approval because God is the King of the kingdom of heaven) but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. 22 Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, (don't we have so and so number of prophetic ministries that we run on the earth in your name) and done many wonders in Your name?’ (Because what we assume in the church today is, once you can do wonders, signs and miracles; then God is on your side. Once you can do things and people are falling down, once you can show some miracles; some supernatural stuff, then God is on your side. But this actually shows us that that is not the real thing) 23 And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’ Another word for practice is pursuit, or you pursued lawlessness.

In the cause of your life, you were a practitioner of lawlessness. Another way we can put it is "you are a worker of iniquity." Another word is "you were a minister, a servant of God, you were a discipler." However, you engaged in lawlessness and you practice lawlessness even in your practice of discipleship. Even in your bid to fulfill your ministry, you were also fulfilling unrighteousness. As you were doing good, you were also doing evil. You were doing evil behind the scene; you were doing good in front of the people. You practice lawlessness and therefore, I do not know you. You demonstrated so much power on the earth, you were able to cast out demons but yet, because you were not in full pursuit of fulfillment, because you chased something else outside fulfillment, I do not know you.

This is the first example of people who were disqualified in ministry, and the point is that they practiced lawlessness.

Number two, Acts 1:15-20.

The Bible says:

"And in those days Peter stood up in the midst of the disciples (altogether the number of names was about a hundred and twenty), and said, 16 “Men and brethren, this Scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit spoke before by the mouth of David concerning Judas, who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus; 17 for he was numbered with us and obtained a part (not a full part because it would have resulted into fulfillment) in this ministry.” 18 (Now this man purchased a field with the wages of iniquity; (see the word again).

So, in case somebody is wondering: what does it mean to be a worker of iniquity or to be someone who practice lawlessness? Apostle Peter said "Now this man purchased a field with the wages of iniquity." You cannot collect wages until you are a worker. So he was a worker of iniquity and so he got wages of iniquity.

Another word is "reward of iniquity."

"And falling headlong, he burst open in the middle and all his entrails gushed out. 19 And it became known to all those dwelling in Jerusalem; so that field is called in their own language, Akel Dama, that is, Field of Blood.)

20 “For it is written in the Book of Psalms:

‘Let his dwelling place be desolate,
And let no one live in it’;

and,

‘Let another take his office.’

He had a place! He even obtained a part of the ministry. So it means he began to pursue or to run after fulfillment. However along the way, he began to pursue something else. Bible called it wages of iniquity. He began to pursue material things at the expense of his faith. He denied his master, he betrayed his master so that he could receive a wage, a reward. Apostle Paul said it has been said aforetime "let another take his place." And that is the word. There are men and women in ministry today that it has been decreed over them, that another shall take their place. Because even though they began well in ministry with the goal of pleasing the Lord, seeking the Lord and following Him, they have deviated into something else, looking for something else. And so because they were in search of wages, outside righteousness, they have lost their offices in the kingdom and others have been taking their places.

For Saul, it was David. God said I have found a man after my own heart. For now your kingdom would have been established, but I have found a man after my heart. It was even a young man that God found to replace an old man. And he was not even too old lest we sat God was replacing him for old age. It was because of his iniquity that brought him to that place where he was replaced. I want us to see another example in Acts of the Apostles chapter 19. This is a more graphical example.

Example Three, Acts 19:11-16.

The Bible says:

"Now God worked unusual miracles by the hands of Paul, 12 so that even handkerchiefs or aprons were brought from his body to the sick, and the diseases left them and the evil spirits went out of them. 13 Then some of the itinerant Jewish exorcists took it upon themselves to call the name of the Lord Jesus over those who had evil spirits, saying, "We exorcise you by the Jesus whom Paul preaches.” 14 Also there were seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, who did so. 15 And the evil spirit answered and said, “Jesus I know (Why? Because Jesus was and is the Son of God. So, I know), and Paul I know; (Why? Paul was a disciple of Jesus Christ) but who are you?” Who is your discipler, who is your master? Because you can only command authority after the order of your master. If the one who has been mastering your life lacks authority, you would lack authority. If you have been following an authority figure, then you would command authority after his order. 16 Then the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, overpowered them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded."

Many people have been frustrated in ministry today because of this. Let me give you an example. Someone who does not follow Bishop David Oyedepo saying "in the name of Jesus, the God of my father David Oyedepo, I cast you out" and he is not a follower. So the demon simply said "David Oyedepo I know, Jesus I know, who are you?" You cannot claim a benefit that you have not entitlement to. It is neither your father’s right nor his property to walk in authority yet you are claiming it, I hope you will not be embarrassed. It is rather important that you choose carefully whom you will serve, that is what Joshua said to the children of Israel. Choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods that your father served at the other side of the river, whether the gods of Egypt. But as for me and my family, we will serve the Lord.

Don't come in the future and be saying in the name of the Lord whom Joshua is serving I cast you out. If you do that, the demons will say God we know, Joshua who is following God we know, who are you? This is the time for you to rearrange and realign your loyalty in the Spirit. Choose whom you will serve. If you will command authority, if you will command obedience, of demons and principalities and powers on this earth, then you must be a follower of someone who is greater than them. The Bible says "greater is He that is in you (if you are a follower of Jesus Christ) than he that is in the world. So you are not living a life that is below circumstances, you are living a life above circumstances. You are seated with Christ Jesus in heavenly places, far above principalities and powers.

I want us to another example, a very funny one in 2 Timothy chapter 4, verse 9-11. The Bible says: "Be diligent to come to me quickly; 10 for Demas has forsaken me, having loved this present world, and has departed for Thessalonica—Crescens for Galatia, Titus for Dalmatia. 11 Only Luke is with me. Get Mark and bring him with you, for he is useful to me for ministry." I am sure you know that for Apostle Paul to be that concerned about Demas it means brother Demas was once a fervent believer. He was once a firebrand, he was once somebody who could do all things in the ministry, and he must have carried the grace of God. But at a critical time in the life of Apostle Paul that he needed him and the grace of God on his life, he was nowhere to be found.

So at the time when he was close to his fulfillment, he departed for Thessalonica; in pursuit of fulfillment, No! For something else. Many people are in different places today, and I am sure Covid-19 has exposed many people to opportunities to review their decisions. Many people have found themselves working with corporations and companies that have no link to their God. Many people have been serving gods in the name of jobs, and because it was for your survival, you never thought about it. This is time for you to check things out. Have you been running away from your God in search of greener pasture, or have you responded to the grace of God on your life in the very place that you are working?

Demas was fulfilled somewhere, he left fulfillment and pursued something else. Bible says "he has loved this present world", and that present world at the time was not even compared to our own present world. Many people are in danger of the disease of the love of this world. Disease that makes fervent ministers of the gospel, apostles, to delve into things that have no link to God and then build empires there, abandoning their first love. Bible says angels who could not keep their proper domain God has left in everlasting judgment. You must abide in your calling, you must tarry. Although the fig tree shall not blossom, yet I will rejoice. You must find joy in the place that God has planted you.

The very assignment that God has committed into your hands must become a source of joy to you. Even though it does not look like it, you must labor. Apostle Paul was talking to the Thessalonians in 1st Thessalonians that they should mind their business and work with their hands. He admonished them not to go in pursuit of happiness and then let go of fulfillment. In pursuit of freedom, don't abandon your true fulfillment because haven lay hold of the happiness, you may be in dare need of fulfillment and you may never find it again.

Let us go to the last point in 2 Kings chapter 5:20-27. It is a popular story but I will skip a few verses there. The Bible says:

"But Gehazi, the servant of Elisha the man of God, said, “Look, my master has spared Naaman this Syrian, while not receiving from his hands what he brought; but as the Lord lives, I will run after him and take something from him." I, Gehazi, will pursue him as the Lord my God lives. He even brought himself under a serious oath. Although for a number of years now, I have been pursuing the will of God for my life. But today, after encountering such gifts from the Naaman, I will run after him and collect those things that my master has rejected. Because really, this is what makes people to destroy their faith. They just tell themselves, "How can I ever be in contact with this kind of wealth again? So this one, I must take it. Even though God is telling me it is a no, I will take it. It may never come again.

21 So Gehazi pursued Naaman. When Naaman saw him running after him, he got down from the chariot to meet him, and said, “Is all well?” This your pursuit that is destroying your life, destroying your marriage, that is breaking your hear up and down, this pursuit, that you still continued with, is all well? Now let us jump to verse 25. "Now he went in and stood before his master. Elisha said to him, “Where did you go, Gehazi?” And he said, “Your servant did not go anywhere.” Because when people begin to pursue something else outside fulfillment, they begin to lie. 26 Then he said to him, “Did not my heart go with you when the man turned back from his chariot to meet you? Is it time to receive money and to receive clothing, olive groves and vineyards, sheep and oxen, male and female servants?

This is something that we must meditate on. As gospel ministers, gospel preachers, pastors, apostles, prophets and teachers, there is a time to receive money. It is not every time, it is not every Sunday or every day. There is a time. Even for those who are emerging in ministry, there is a time to receive money. Don't get carried away by the volume of money than is being branded around across the space, there is a time for you to receive money. Now one of the things that you must understand here is that in the future, in a time long from now, if you tarry, you will receive money. But it has to be at the right time.

"Is it time to receive money?" This is something that has prevented many people from abiding in their call, and it has prevented many people from bringing their bodies into subjection. Many people have been preaching powerful messages but their lives are being disqualified simply because they do not know the time to receive money or things from people. It did not stop there. He said "Is it time to receive money and to receive clothing, olive groves and vineyards, sheep and oxen, male and female servants? Is time to receive cars, a brand new phone, a new Ipad? Is it time to receive free ticket to Dubai to London? Is it time?

There is time for everything. And you see, when people refuse to follow their masters in pursuit of happiness, in pursuit of something else, one of the things that they begin to do is that they become disconnected from their sense of discernment. They will not be able to discern again. Can we rightly assume that Gehazi does not know time before? He just got to a point in time, overwhelmed with his desires; he suddenly lost touch or sense of discernment. Do you think Elisha does not need anything that they brought? But he was in touch with his sense of discernment, he knew the time and the season, he knew when to receive. And this we must understand. See what happened to Gehazi.

"Therefore the leprosy of Naaman shall cling to you and your descendants forever.” And he went out from his presence leprous, as white as snow." He was not to be disqualified, that was not his primary desire. He started ministry in pursuit of fulfillment, but when he deviated from that path, he went to a path of disqualification, the path of error that robs him of his sense of judgment. He could no longer tell when to do from when not to do, and so he was led into error. Bible says everyone sins when they are drawn by their lust. Lust for power, lust for money, lust for anything. That is why you and I must understand the need to bring our bodies into subjection, the need to bring our egos into subjection, the need to understand that Christ must be preached.

Him we preach, warning everyman, we are not here to boast in ourselves, we are here to help people to find Christ. Bringing people to their Lord should be our primary preoccupations. Making people to be established in Him should be our joy. And in due season, in due time, if we do not tarry; we will receive a prize. There is a reward. Jesus said those who have followed me till this moment, I bestow upon you the kingdom, just as my Father as bestowed the kingdom upon me. You who have followed me, in my trials, Jesus said they will also seat on the twelve thrones judging the twelve the twelve tribes of Israel, he who has followed me, said Jesus.

There is a reward. They said "Lord Lord, we have abandoned all and we have followed you. What shall we have?" He said to them "no one who has abandoned this and that who will not have something to show for it in this life, and in the life to come." You have not come to God who calls the house of Jacob in vain, No! God said I have not call the house of Jacob to seek me in vain. If you seek the Lord you will find Him, in finding him you will find fulfillment, in finding Him, you will find your joy. Every desire of your heart in compliance to His will, you will find. Your joy is in Him, you must pursue Him. You must make Him your God. Apostle Paul said "that I may know Him." I want to know Him, I want to become like Him. He is my Lord and my master; I want to walk in His order. I want to demonstrate the power that He demonstrated, I want to be conformed to His death.

No wonder he said "I am crucified with Christ" because He is my discipler. I am His disciple but nevertheless I live. The life that I live in the flesh, I live it by faith in the Son of God who loved me and gave Himself for me. Are you crucified in Christ Jesus? Are you willing to make Jesus the only one you will follow, the only one you will pursue? Are you able to take heed to the ministry that you have received from the Lord, that you may fulfill it? If you fulfill every other thing, except the ministry that you have received from the Lord, you are a failure. Nothing that you could ever accumulate on this earth could be equal to fulfilling your ministry that God has committed into your hands.

It is time for you to pray to God. Say Lord, I will not trade fulfillment in ministry for anything. I shall find contentment and satisfaction in you. You shall be enough for me Lord. I shall remain in you, rooted and built in you. In you I live, in you I move and have my being in the name of Jesus! In you I live oh God, by you I move. By you I have my being!

Amen!
