Vision In The Light: How To Secure A Leadership Edge

"My son, eat honey because it is good, and the honeycomb which is sweet to your taste; So shall the knowledge of wisdom be to your soul; If you have found it, there is a prospect, and your hope will not be cut off."

Proverbs 24:13-14

If you look carefully at the words of the Scriptures; you would notice notice a few keywords:

  • Honey
  • Honeycomb
  • Knowledge
  • Wisdom
  • Prospect
  • Your Hope (Future)

My assignment in this article is to help you to secure your leadership edge through vision in the light. While a man could suddenly find himself or herself in a leadership place, position or responsibility; a man cannot suddenly succeed or remain in leadership.

From the dictionary, the word 'edge' means quite a number of things.

  • It means the outside limit of an object; a surface or an area, the part furthest from the centre.
  • It means the sharp part of a blade, knife or sword that is used for cutting.
  • The point at which something, especially something bad, may begin to happen
  • It also means a slight advantage over somebody or something.

Beyond arriving at a place or point in one's leadership journey; it is important for every leader to be conscious of his or her leadership edge and to secure it. To remain in leadership, to remain relevant, to remain influential, a leader must be aware of his or her leadership edge and must protect, guard, keep and secure it.

The word 'prospect' in that earlier Scripture that we read means the possibility that something will happen; it also implies an idea of what might or will happen in the future. It therefore becomes clear that the word 'prospect' is synonymous to vision – for a vision is also an idea or picture or concept of a future anticipated.

From the Scripture, we understand that there is a prospect only for someone who finds the knowledge of wisdom. What then is the knowledge of wisdom? If there is knowledge of wisdom, then; I believe there is knowledge of the fool. For instance, a fool says in his heart that there is no God. I believe what a fool says is a product of what the fool knows.

The word 'wisdom' there connotes the source or atmosphere or realm where the knowledge comes from. To have a prospect that cannot be cut off – eliminated or killed; a man-leader or a woman-leader must seek out his or her vision from the right source or environment – the light.

"The poorest vision in the light is clearer than the best vision in the dark."

Gboyega Adedeji

The story of Abraham and Lot in the book of Genesis 13 gives a clear picture of how a leadership edge can be secured through correct vision – which is built on the truth. It is not enough to have great ideas, in leadership – every leader must ask the question, "Is this idea born from ignorance or understanding? Am I aware of all I need to know to make this decision?"

Hasty leadership decisions are the biggest terminators of countless leadership edges. To secure your own leadership effectiveness; you must be sure you know all you need to know before you move forward. Moving forward in error, assumptions, falsehood or pretentious grounds could lead to your leadership extinction – you must remain sharp on your edge – you must capture your vision only in the light! Till I hear or read from you, stay in the light – the true knowledge!
