In this article, the Holy Spirit has instructed that we consider this very important and critical subject matter and we are looking at choosing God, six critical reasons that makes God our choice. That’s what we are going to be examining under the leadership of the Holy Spirit. And I believe that the intent of the Lord is to bring us into the realization and the understanding that we have a choice to make.
Every time and in every situation, we have a choice to make. And that’s why God the Almighty, the King of kings and the Lord of lords is presenting before us and He is giving us six critical reasons that makes God our choice in all in our choosing. My text will be taken from Isaiah 55 we will read the length of that chapter. That means we will read from verse 1 to verse 13. Its our major text for today but we are going to be taking references from other Scriptures.
“Ho! Everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; And you who have no money, Come, buy and eat. Yes, come, buy wine and milk Without money and without price. 2 Why do you [a]spend money for what is not bread, And your wages for what does not satisfy? Listen carefully to Me, and eat what is good, And let your soul delight itself in abundance.3 Incline your ear, and come to Me. Hear, and your soul shall live; And I will make an everlasting covenant with you—The sure mercies of David.4 Indeed I have given him as a witness to the people, A leader and commander for the people.5 Surely you shall call a nation you do not know, And nations who do not know you shall run to you, Because of the Lord your God, And the Holy One of Israel; For He has glorified you.” 6 Seek the Lord while He may be found, Call upon Him while He is near. 7 Let the [b]wicked forsake his way, And the unrighteous man his thoughts; Let him return to the Lord, And He will have mercy on him; And to our God, For He will abundantly pardon.8 “For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways,” says the Lord.9 “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts.10 “For as the rain comes down, and the snow from heaven, And do not return there, But water the earth, And make it bring forth and bud, That it may give seed to the sower, and bread to the eater,11 So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; It shall not return to Me [c]void, But it shall accomplish what I please, And it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it.12 “For you shall go out with joy, And be led out with peace; The mountains and the hills Shall break forth into singing before you, And all the trees of the field shall clap their hands.13 Instead of the thorn shall come up the cypress tree, And instead of the brier shall come up the myrtle tree; And it shall be to the Lord for a name, For an everlasting sign that shall not be cut off.” May the Lord bless the reading of His word in the name of Jesus.
So, in this piece we are going to be examining six critical reasons that makes God our choice. Before we begin to look into those critical reasons, there is a personality in question and that is God. In this Isaiah 55, God started speaking if you notice, God started speaking from the beginning of that verse 1 to the very end in verse 13. These are the words of the Lord God. What He did first was to call us to an invitation. Ho, everyone who thirst, come! Meaning that God is always in the business of inviting people to His provision or to His abundance. God is not a personality that has abundance for Himself, and to exclusively consume it on Himself. He is always beckoning; He is always inviting us to an invitation in His presence. He said; “ho everyone who thirst.” If He is inviting you to come, then there is something to come to.
There is someone to come; that’s why the Bible says He has not called the house of Jacob to seek Him, to approach Him in vain. So, when God is calling forth with an invitation, He is a calling you to the abundance that is in His presence. The Bible says that in the presence of God there is fullness of joy and at His right hand are pleasures forever more. Not for a time, not for a season but forever more. So, when God is inviting us into His presence, inviting us to Himself, He is inviting us to benefit, to take part and to come and enjoy something that is in Him that we cannot find anywhere else. So, that is the personality we are talking about. So, this morning, the Holy Spirit wants us to look at and examine six critical reasons why God should be a choice for over and again. That no matter what comes our way, no matter what confronts us we choose God over and again.
Number One: God identified, He said everyone who thirst. So, we are thirsty. The first reason we should make God our choice is because we are thirsty. Why should God be our choice when we are thirsty? He has the waters. That was the first thing He mentioned. Mankind is thirsty and He has the waters. He does not have limited water; He has the waters. I want us to go to Isaiah 44, Scriptures proving that God has the waters. God speaking in Isaiah 44:3. It says; “I will pour water on him who is thirsty.” So, God identified, the reason why God is beckoning on us to come is because He knows that we are thirsty. He said “I will pour water on Him who is thirsty. And floods on the dry ground. I will pour my Spirit on your descendants and My blessing on your offspring.” He has the waters.
Revelations 21 verse 6. God has the waters. “And He said to me, it is done. I am the alpha and the omega, the beginning and the end. I will give of the fountain of the water.” You cannot give what you don’t have. God said I will give of the fountain of the water of life, freely to Him who thirst. God knows that we are thirsty. The reason we need to choose God, is because we are thirsty. I don’t know about you but mankind has been created with a vacuum of thirst. There is a thirst in your spirit you might not come to terms with it, you might not fully understand it or comprehend it yet but there is a thirst only God can satisfy. And He said I will give of the fountain of life freely to Him who thirst.
So, what qualifies you for the waters that He has is that you are thirsty. When mankind acknowledge that they are thirsty, God that has the waters will satisfy. He gives water to the thirsty. In Psalm 23 verse 2, David acknowledged; He said in verse 2, “the Lord is my shepherd I shall not want. He said He leads me by quiet waters.” When a Shepard is leading a sheep, He knows where they are thirsty, He knows where they are hungry. Sometimes he knows when they are experiencing heat and they need a water break. And if the shepherd does not know the location of the waters, the sheep are doomed. But God does not just know the location of the waters, He has the waters.
I want us to see what Jesus said in John 4 verse 10 when He was speaking to that woman by the well. So that we know that He has waters. “Jesus answered and said to her, if you know the gift of God, and who it is who says to you give me a drink, you would have asked Him and He would have given you living waters.” Because He has it. Jesus was looking at that Samaritan woman, He said woman you are thirsty and you don’t know, it looks as if I am thirsty, I am asking you to give me a drink, but you are actually the one that is thirsty, that needs me to give living water. What’s the situation of this woman? Because when we are talking about us being thirsty, we are talking about a deprivation, a level of deprivation in our spirit that longs for a satisfaction in God.
When we talk about mankind being thirsty, it is the deprivation that happens to man that makes Him very vulnerable and makes him very desperate for a satisfaction that only God can provide. Because, even the devil knows that mankind is thirsty. He tries to provide the false, he tries to provide the fake, but the original is in God. Jesus said if you know the one that is asking you, you would have asked Him. Because, you are actually the one in need. So, what is Jesus saying to us from this Scripture? We are actually the one in need of God and God is still calling us to an invitation to choose Him. If you are in need of someone or something, don’t you run after those things? But see our gracious Father, He still runs after us. If you look at that Isaiah 55 verse 1 that we read it says everyone who thirst come.
When Jesus was giving the parable about the kingdom of God, He said the kingdom of heaven is like a man that was organizing a feast and invited people to come in. they are the ones that were hungry and He was still inviting them to the feats and they said they were busy. One said I want to and marry another one said I have business to attend to, another one said you know what I just want to have my own time and do my own thing. And he sent his messengers out to go to the street anyone that you find that is willing, let them come. Mankind is thirsty and we desperately need God. Because of the level of our thirst. Why should we choose Him? Because He has the waters. He is the only one that can satisfy the longing of our soul.
In Isaiah 49 verse 10. God was speaking about the acceptable time and year of the Lord. He said; “they shall neither hunger nor thirst, neither heat nor sun shall strike them for He who has mercy on them will lead them even by the springs of water he will guild them.” No one can do this but God. It said He will have mercy on them, and even by the sprigs of water He will guild us. That’s why you should choose Him. Jesus speaking in John 7 verse 37; it said; “On the last day, that day of the great feast, Jesus stood and cried saying; if anyone thirst;” Why is God always emphasizing on this? If anyone thirst, let him come to me and drink. It looks like the one that is thirsty should be the one that is desperately in need of a source of water. But it now looks like the one that has the source of water is the one that is desperately looking for those that are thirsty that needs the water. God is in search of us when we should be in search of Him. He said let him come to me and drink.
What qualifies you for the waters God has is that you are thirsty. Acknowledge that you are thirsty. Mankind has been forming for years; you are thirsty and you are pretending about it. How will you get help? We must acknowledge that we are thirsty. Just like that songs says; we are desperate people, we want more. That should be our posture. We are thirsty people, we need you Lord. You have the waters. Can you just lift up your voice and pray; I don’t know the level of your thirst at this moment, I want you to pray to the Lord, and say Lord I am thirsty, I come to the waters. What is the level of your thirst? Because the level of your thirst shows the level of your desperation. Say to Lord I am thirsty, I come to the fountains of living waters, I come to the springs of life. Lord give me to drink, satisfy my thirst, give me to drink. Satisfy me o lord in your mercy.
Revelations chapter 22 verse 1, says; “And He showed me a pure river of water of life.” What he was showed was pure, what the devil has is impure. He showed me a pure river of water of life clear as crystal, proceeding from the throne of God. He has the waters. The water is proceeding from the throne of God and of the Lamb. That is the source of the river of life. He is the source of the river of life. He is the river that never runs dry. Because He is the source. The river can never run dry from the source. Along the path it can dry up but not from the source. No man is the source of the river of life. He is the source of the river of life, the river proceeds from the throne of God. We are looking at six critical reasons that makes God our choice. We looked at number one and we said it is because we are thirsty.
Number Two: We are hungry and He has the bread, the wine and the milk. If you look at that Isaiah 55 that we read earlier, when you look at verse 1 in continuation to verse 2, when God was making that invitation, He didn’t just say those that are thirsty. He said; “come buy and eat, yes, come buy wine and milk without money and without prize. Why do you spend money for what is not bread?” He has the bread, the wine and the milk. “And your wages for what does not satisfy. He said listen carefully to me and eat what is good.” He is the one that feeds us with what is good. And let your soul delight itself in abundance. He has the bread, the wine and the milk. And we are hungry. In Matthew 4 verse 4, when the devil came to tempt Jesus; and he said “if you are the son of God, turn this stone into bread, Jesus replying said to him, man must not live by bread alone.”
Even though we are hungry, we know that this physical bread cannot satisfy. He said by every word. We live by every word; we live by the bread that comes down from heaven, by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God. We are hungry, He has the bread.
Psalm 107 verse 9. “For He satisfies the longing soul, and fills the hungry soul with goodness.” God has the bread, the wine and the milk. So, He satisfies. Let us see what Jesus said in John 6 verse 35 and we read verse 51. “And Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst.” Meaning that when you respond to the invitation of come and you come, Jesus said; you shall never hunger. Was Jesus talking about physical hunger? He is saying the same thing He said in Matthew 4 verse 4, man must not live by bread alone but by every word. He said I am the bread of life, he who come to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst. Verse 51 says; “I am the living bread which came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever; and the bread that I shall give is My flesh, which I shall give for the life of the world.”
He has the bread, the bread from heaven. That’s Jesus the word of God. We are hungry, we must acknowledge and come to Him that has the bread, the wine and the milk. If you are not hungry, what business do you have at the restaurant? Those that come to Him must believe that He is the living bread. And He rewards whosoever seeks Him. He wards us with bread. When you come as thirst, He rewards with water, when you come as hungry, He satisfies you with bread. He has the bread. He said come and buy wine and milk without money and without price freely. It is only God that feeds freely. We are hungry. 2 Corinthians 9:10. “Now [g]may He who supplies seed to the sower, and bread for food, [h]supply and multiply the seed you have sown and increase the fruits of your righteousness.”
He supplies bread for food. Can you be a supplier of something if you don’t, have it? He supplies bread for food because He has bread. Matthew 6 verse 11. When Jesus was teaching His disciples how to pray, He said when you are asking the Father, because prayer is about you asking the Father. He said when you are asking the Father, ask Him this; “give us this day our daily bread.” Why should we ask daily for bread? It is because we are hungry. Jesus mandated the disciples, in your communication with God, acknowledge your hunger. Give us this day our daily satisfaction. Satisfy us today because we are hungry. Can we acknowledge to Him this today that we are hungry? Say Lord I need you to satisfy me today, Lord I am hungry; I have come to you, I want to eat of the bread of life, so that I hunger no more.
Jesus said whoever comes and eats of this bread will never hunger. Lord, I acknowledge that I am hungry, I want to partake of the bread of life.
Number Three: We are Unknown Outside Him, He defines our purpose. Outside God we are unknown. He defines our purpose. In Genesis 2 verse 7, the Bible says that; God formed man out of the dust of the ground and without the breath of God in that man, that man was unknown, that man did not have a name. That man did not have an assignment. Then the Bible says and God breath into His nostrils the breath of life and man became. No man becomes outside God, we are unknown outside Him. We need Him because we are unknown outside Him. you can look at the world and look at people and it looks as if they have a name, it looks as if they have made a name for themselves, you will ask; before the Father, the creator of the ends of the earth, do they have a name? Demons when they were dealing with the seven sons of Scever, they said; Jesus we know, Paul we know, who are you? Because outside God seven sons of Scever were unknown. We are unknown outside Him, that’s why we need God. Paul had Jesus, the seven sons of Scever, who are you? We are unknown outside Him, He defines our purpose. That’s why we need Him. God becomes our choice because without Him we are unknown.
Jeremaiah 32 verse 19. “You are great in counsel and mighty in work. For your eyes are open to all the ways of the son of men, to give to every one according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings.” It said you are great in counsel and mighty in work, for your eyes are open to all the ways of the sons of men. So, when you look at people, human beings on the earth, how many are known? Outside God we are unknown. We need Him to define us. Without God Adam was nothing until God breathed into His nostrils the breath of life, he was nothing. He was dead earth. Man became! We become in His hands, we become in Him. Man became a living being. And when man became a living being; God took the man that He had formed and placed him in the garden that He has planted.
Psalm 33:11. “The counsel of the Lord stands forever, the plans of his heart to all generation.” Another word for counsel is the purpose of the Lord. The purpose of the Lord stands forever; unchanging. And it’s the plan of His heart to all generation. It cannot be altered. So, if you are not in the eyes of the Lord favorable or chosen or known then you are unknown. So, we need Him. Isaiha 46 verse 10. “Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times things that are not yet done. Saying; my counsel, another word for counsel is His purpose. My purpose shall stand and I will do all my pleasure.” I remember the testimony of pastor Adeboye, He said when God called him and he got to a moment of walk with God, he said God told him to go to the beach and said he should draw the image of man, and he drew it. He said after drawing it, God asked him to step back a little and he did. And the wave of the sea came and covered that portion of the sand and the image vanished. He said and God told him, He said the day you try to do anything outside me, He said the way that image vanished without any trace, he said that is how your memory will vanish from the face of the earth.
Because that is the truth. See what God did to Nebuchadnezzar, Nebuchadnezzar was a wealthy king, he taught he had influence, he taught he had power, and God said you don’t acknowledge Me? He said see for a season you will eat like the beast and over-night his appearance was altered, he grew claws like animal and hair on his body and he ate grass like animals. Until he came to an understanding that there is a God in heaven that rules in the affairs of men.
He said and when my understanding returned to me, then his influence. Who will make an animal king? He said then my authority was restored to me. The reason many human beings are living a vagabond life is because they are without God. Without God you unknown. I don’t care how much billions you have in your account, how much name and how many news-paper have carried your image and written about your biography, without God you are unknown. He defines our purpose.
Number Four: We are limited in thoughts and expression. He is unlimited why should God be our choice? Because we are limited in thoughts and expression. Isaiah 55 that we read, it said; My thoughts are not your thoughts, My ways are not your ways, as the heaven is high above the earth, did we see the comparism? So are my thoughts higher. Its not an insult, it’s the truth. So, are My thoughts higher than your thoughts and My ways than your ways. He is unlimited. That’s why Jesus was quoting that Scripture in Psalms He said you are gods and children of the most-high. When you come to God you will be like Him. You are gods, if you have God you will be like Him. Genesis 1 verse 26 says let us make man in our image after our likeness. So, Jesus affirmed it. You are gods; children of the most-high, He said but if you don’t come to the Father and be found in Him, you will die like mere men.
1 Corinthians 2 verse 9 says; “But as it is written, eyes have not seen, not ear heard.” You will ask; what are the things eyes have not seen? God is saying your eyes are limited, they have not seen. Ears have not heard. Your ears are limited, they cant hear this dimension, nor has it entered into the heart of man; because man is limited. The things which God has prepared for those who love Him. The limitation of the eyes cannot comprehend it. The limitation of the ears, what God is doing is beyond it. That’s why He said eyes have not seen, ears have not heard, it has not yet entered into the heart of men the things that God has prepared for those who love Him. He is unlimited, we are limited. We need Him because we are limited. That’s why the Bible says; let this mind be in you; for you to do things like God, you must enter the mind of God. To be able to experience unlimitedness; life without limits, then you must be in Him, you must know Him.
Apostle Paul was speaking in Ephesians 1 verse 18, he was praying for the church, see what He said; “The eyes of your understanding being enlightened that you may know.” Because if the eyes of your understanding is not being enlightened, what does it mean for the eyes of your understanding being enlightened? That the light of God will penetrate the unlimitedness of God, will penetrate your limitation that you can experience the dimension of God, that God has made available. See what he said; “The eyes of your understanding being enlightened, that you may know what is the hope of his calling.” In your limited state, you cannot know what is the hope of His calling. But when you have Him and have chosen Him, the eyes of your understanding will be enlightened, then you will know what are the riches in the glory of His inheritance in the saints and what is the exceeding greatness of His power towards us who believe; according to the working of His mighty power. He is unlimited.
And that’s why you will see in the earth man dwells in the flesh realm, in the carnal realm and God dwells in the Spiritual realm. What makes you to become unstoppable, unlimited is that the realm of God which is Spiritual interfuses with our realm which is carnal. And that’s why Apostle Paul will say; a carnal man cannot please God. You cannot carry the treasures of heaven in carnality. It takes the spiritual, because that’s a realm in which He operates. It’s the realm of unlimitedness. That’s why when you are dreaming, it looks as if you are everywhere at the same time. You can see what is ahead, you can see what is behind, you can see what is in the middle. Does it happen when you wake up? Because, your dream realm is a spiritual realm. That is why when you are dreaming its as if you know everything.
Somebody comes, without physically knowing the person you know the person. Its an unlimited realm. The resources there are so abundant that you are able to see and know without actually knowing or seeing. And you wake up and say this thing is too real as if it happened on the earth. It happened. Its just that it didn’t happen in this realm, it happened in that realm. That’s why we need God. The devil has a falsehood of these things. When people do soul travel, it’s a demonic activity to take people into the spiritual realm to have a feel of it. Don’t think as a believer its not possible in God. In the book of Revelation John said I was in the Spirit on the Lord’s day and I heard a voice saying come up thither and that was how the experience started. Apostle Paul said I was caught up into the third heavens, he knew what happened to him, he said I saw things that my mouth cannot utter. It was real.
Daniel had such experience, the angel said Daniel sleep, you are a man of abundant revelations, sleep you will wake up. When you wake up, you will take your own inheritance. So, this realm is real, its an unlimited realm where you as a man, God allows you to experience the divine, experience the supernatural, where you are seeing things in the Spirit, things that eyes have not seen, things that ears have not heard, things that have not yet entered into the hearts of men are things that are available in God. You need Him.
I remember one experience I heard, I just got baptized in the Holy Ghost and I was just so excited in my Spirit. I always wanted to have spiritual experiences all the time, it’s as if this world is not worthy of me. I was behaving like Enoch at that time. That time I will just be walking on the road and praying in the Holy Spirit and the next thing I will be hearing conversations. People are talking, normal human beings are talking around me and I will be hearing conversations in the realm of the Spirit. negotiations about the destinies of people. Some voices I can’t even explain, I have not heard those type of voices before and I will be saying what is happening, I was confused. My level of maturity then was low and at a point I said Lord I don’t want to be hearing again. What should I do with what I am hearing?
Since I didn’t understand it, I said God let it stop so that I will not run mental, so that human beings won’t be talking to me and I will think I am hearing spirit. but I still desire it to come back. Even though you are in this mortal body, there is a spiritual experience that is possible when you have God, that will make you have access to unlimited resources that are in God. That is beyond the limitation of your flesh. That’s why we need Him, that’s why we must make Him our choice. Why do human beings seek power from the devil? Is there true power? Its in God. There is true power in God. Unlimited resources.
Number Five: We have questions, He has the answers. In Matthew 7 verse 7, Jesus was saying that we should ask and we will receive, we should seek and we will find, we should knock and the door will be opened. We have questions. I don’t know about you but human kind have questions. But who can give us true answers? God! That’s why you need. Have you looked at yourself and say God why am I born in Nigeria? Why was I born in Africa? Why was I born into the family I was born into? Why do I have this look? Why didn’t I come during the time of David? We have questions. Why is Nigeria like this? Why all the violence and killings? We have questions. But the one that can give us the answer is God. And that’s why we must choose Him. Saul had questions. Saul had questions, instead of Saul to go to God for answers, he consulted magic. And that was his doom.
Because he did not understand, he didn’t have God. He had lost God. When men loose God, they can result to any means to find answers to their questions. But who we need is God, He has the answers. When we pray what are we doing, we are asking questions. I didn’t understand that until I saw this Scripture. John 15, I want us to look at it together very quickly. John 15nverse 16. It said; “You did not choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruits and that your fruit will remain. And whatever you ask;” and when you see that, what are you asking? There are questions. He said ask questions; do you ask answers? He said whatever you ask the Father in my name, He will give you.” He will supply, He will answer. So, when we are praying, we are asking questions. As a believer don’t be fooled. Don’t say I have question but I don’t know what to do about it, pray!
That’s what prayer is for, for you to ask questions. And Jesus said whatever you ask. So, whatever question you ask you will get answers. Its only God you cannot ask foolish question. You may ask human beings and they will say don’t you have sense? But not God. Jesus said whatever you ask, let it look like a foolish question to human beings, its not foolish to God, He will answer. We must go to Him and choose Him for our answers. We must choose Him for our answers. Lastly;
Number Six; Mankind was cursed, He has the blessing. Galatians 3 verse 13. “Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, we were cursed, He has the blessing. But if you have not yet been redeemed by Christ, you are still cursed and you need the blessing. “Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree”), 14 that the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.” We need God because without Him, we remain cursed. He has the blessings. These are the six reasons why we need God. All these things are in that Isaiah 55 verse 1 to 13 that we read. But I want to particularly read Isaiah 55 verse 6 to us in the amplified. It says; “seek, inquire for, and require the Lord while He may be found; Claiming Him by necessity. Its not a luxury, God is a necessity. Don’t say if I like, if I don’t like, God is like a luxury. No! claiming Him by necessity, and call upon Him while He is near. Claim God by necessity, you don’t have the luxury of choosing Him anyhow. We don’t have the luxury of living our life without Him. We don’t have the luxury of trying to figure it out on our own. Let me try first, when I am out of options then I will look at God as an option. Its not an option. It’s a necessity. When you go for an exam, the instruction says you have five theory questions, number one is compulsory. Answer number one and any other two;
That’s how God is; compulsory! You can’t do life without Him. I don’t know if you can do life without Him, but we can’t do life without Him.
