The Anointing Oil 1: Understanding What The Anointing Oil Represents

Many of us when we talk about the anointing oil, we quickly think about “Goya” (the olive oil that we use). But the Holy Spirit will bring us to the understanding of what the anointing oil represents, what is the purpose of the anointing oil? What is the reason for the anointing oil? Why did God introduce the anointing? We are going to look at the 1st book of the first mention of the anointing oil in the Bible. The book of Exodus chapter 30, God instructed Moses and this will be the focus reference Scripture for this message. Exodus 30:22-33, it says:

22 Moreover the Lord spoke to Moses, saying:  23 "Also take for yourself quality spices — five hundred shekels of liquid myrrh, half as much sweet-smelling cinnamon (two hundred and fifty shekels), two hundred and fifty shekels of sweet-smelling cane,  24 five hundred shekels of cassia, according to the shekel of the sanctuary, and a hin of olive oil. 25 And you shall make from these a holy anointing oil, an ointment compounded according to the art of the perfumer. It shall be a holy anointing oil. 26 With it you shall anoint the tabernacle of meeting and the ark of the Testimony;

27 the table and all its utensils, the lampstand and its utensils, and the altar of incense; 28 the altar of burnt offering with all its utensils, and the laver and its base. 29 You shall consecrate them, that they may be most holy; whatever touches them must be holy. 30 And you shall anoint Aaron and his sons, and consecrate them, that they may minister to Me as priests. 31 "And you shall speak to the children of Israel, saying: 'This shall be a holy anointing oil to Me throughout your generations.

32 It shall not be poured on man's flesh; nor shall you make any other like it, according to its composition. It is holy, and it shall be holy to you. 33 Whoever compounds any like it, or whoever puts any of it on an outsider, shall be cut off from his people.'"

Now this is the first time God was going to introduce the anointing oil. Before this time, there was nothing called the anointing oil, the holy anointing oil. Now God instructed Moses in Exodus Chapter 30 and told him that “Make an anointing oil” and He gave him 5 ingredients. God did not ask him to look for the ingredients, God mentioned 5 specific ingredients and they are Myrrh, Sweet Cinnamon, Calamus; “Calamus” was also called “Sweet Cane”, Cassia and He said add a hin of Olive oil.

So, God mentioned five ingredients for the making of the anointing oil. 5 is a symbol of Grace. God didn’t mention 4, He didn’t mention 7. He didn’t mention 6. He only mentioned 5 ingredients and 5 symbolizes Grace. It tells us that this anointing oil is a carrier of Grace. So many of us are familiar with the anointing, we say “You are anointed for the race”, “Anointing gives you the auction to function”. Now, the anointing from the beginning, God has made it a carrier of Grace and that is why 5 specific ingredients given by the Lord was mentioned for the making of this anointing oil.

We will look at them, then we will look at what God said concerning the anointing oil.

Myrrh: Myrrh was one of the things that the wise men that came to Jesus presented to him. Myrrh is a scented oil used for embalming. Myrrh is a purifier so one of the things God mentioned for the making of the anointing oil is a oil that purifies. A oil that keeps from decay. You know when they embalm somebody with a particular oil or fragrance or perfume. It is so that the decay will not happen fast so it purifies the body to the time of the burial. Myrrh is the number one so the anointing oil is a purifier that’s why the first thing when the anointing of God comes upon a man, it purifies the man. That is why you see any time the oil is being mentioned the word “consecration” is usually mentioned because the oil makes you pure. It purifies you. It keeps you from decay. It exempts you. The oil is a purifier.

The Sweet Cinnamon: The Sweet Cinnamon talks about sweetness. It is a fragrance. It is a oil that brings about sweetness. God said Moses should use Sweet Cinnamon because it is symbol of what the anointing will do when it comes upon a man. The anointing brings sweetness that is why when we talk about the anointing oil, we say When the anointing comes upon a man, it gives you the auction to function. It brings ease. It takes away struggle. The anointing brings sweetness. It brings sweetness to your ministry. It brings sweetness to your life. It brings sweetness to your home.

Sweet Cane or Calamus: One of the things that I discovered about the sweet cane is that this Sweet Cane is such a oil that also has sweetness. This oil has a sweetness that is more than Sweet Cinnamon. “Double sweetness”. When the anointing comes upon a man, he makes such a difference in the life of that Man. It brings flavour. The anointing brings flavour to your life. Hitherto you have been living your life the way you do. When the anointing comes, it brings sweetness and God said use Sweet Cinnamon and use Calamus (Sweet Cane). So when the anointing comes upon your life, you enjoy double portion of sweetness, of grace.

Cassia: Cassia has a sweet aroma. This oil has a sweet aroma but there is one other thing I realized about Cassia. Cassia retains water. It retains moisture, same thing with Calamus. When the anointing comes upon your life, you retain grace. Grace does not escape your life. The grace of God does not come unto you and escape. Strength does not escape you. You retain it by the anointing. You retain strength. You retain wisdom. you retain knowledge. You retain understanding because of the anointing. No wonder the bible makes us to understand that when the anointing comes upon you, the same anointing teaches you all things and He reminds you of the things Jesus has said before so you have the ability to retain with the anointing.

Olive Oil: God said to Moses “Make sure you get shekels of Cinnamon, get shekels of Myrrh. All those ones he gave it in shekels but when God got to Olive oil. He said get a Hin, a gallon. Overwhelm the pro steps with Olive Oil. Let Olive oil be the carrier of other oils. Let olive oil be the one that carries the other fragrance. When we look at the weight of the other oils that were used for this anointing oil, Olive oil supersedes all of them. Before you can get the oil from Olive plant, it is a painful process, intense. I was watching a program “How it’s made” They were talking about how they extract oil in the old days.

You need to see the giant grinding stones used. And they will go over it again and again until the oil comes out of the olive so the process that brings about the olive is a painful and intense process and that process, God said let it be overwhelming. So the anointing oil, when it comes upon your life gives grace for an overwhelming process. It gives you grace to go through things that are not palatable, things that are not convenient, things that ordinarily people will look at it and say No, I don’t want to be part of this but when the anointing comes upon you, it gives you grace to go through a painful and intense process.

And some of these oil represents some things; Cassia represents devotion, dedication. Sweet Cinnamon represents passion and courage so you are not just passionate about the things of God as a human being that is why the bible says it is God that works in us both to will and to do of his good pleasure. If his anointing those not come upon you, you cannot be passionate about the things of God and that is why it important for us that we know this.

We are going to go into some other parts and from verse 26 God started telling him the things to anoint so the anointing oil is not just for any purpose and not just for anyone.  It is for the things that God has instructed it. The anointing oil was made by God’s instruction and for the things that God instructed it. That is why it is not everyone that can be anointed, it is not everyone that can receive the oil, it has to be according to God’s instruction and according to his order. See what God told Moses, He didn’t say anoint every one of the children of Israel, He didn’t say anoint all the tenth of the children of Israel.

It was specific instructions He gave him; From verse 26, He said: “26 With this anointing oil, anoint the tabernacle of meeting, choice places, the tabernacle of meeting, the ark of the Testimony, 27 the table and all its utensils, the lampstand and its utensils, and the altar of incense; 28 the altar of burnt offering with its utensils, the laver and its base.”  And He said “29 You shall consecrate them, that they may be most holy;” So when the anointing comes upon you, it brings about a consecration of your life. The anointing consecrates. And he said here in verse 30:  Anoint Aaron and his sons, and consecrate them,” The anointing is not just for anybody “Consecrate them that they may minister to Me as priests.”

So the anointing is for priests, it is not for the multitude. I want us to see the emphasis of God there. We have seen Exodus 30:30. Let’s see Exodus 25:6, God was speaking to Moses here and He asked the children of Israel to bring an offering. Exodus 25:6, it says: "Oil for the light, and spices for the anointing oil and for the sweet incense;"

Those spices we mentioned for the anointing oil are so important and that is why for every time there is an anointing, there is always a name for every oil. When God anoints you, He does not just anoint you generally, he anoints you specifically with a name. That oil is to do something. That oil is to perform a function and it is specific. Very specific. God is always detailed. Exodus 29:7, it says: " And you shall take the anointing oil, pour it on his head, and anoint him."

This is talking about Aaron. All through this place, him and his sons were consecrated by the anointing oil. Later God transited from just anointing just priests to anointing Kings. You will not see any where that God will say Just go and anoint anybody. He is always specific. He moved from anointing Kings to anointing Prophets. So the oil is always specific. Let’s see when God started anointing Kings, from Saul in 1st Samuel Chapter 16. Nothing happens until the anointing comes. For Saul he was just an ordinary person.
